What is coaching?
Life coaching is defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) as a profession that uses a specific process of inquiry and conversation to assist individuals in achieving self-discovery, personal development, and growth. Life coaches work with clients to set and reach personal and professional goals, helping them navigate challenges and create actionable plans towards their desired outcomes.

Other professions that may be life coaching with complement, but not replace.
Therapy/Counselling: Therapists often work with clients to address psychological issues, past traumas, or mental health disorders. The focus is typically on healing and understanding past experiences, whereas life coaching is more about setting future goals and actions.
Mentoring: Mentors usually share their experiences and provide guidance based on their own expertise in a specific field. In contrast, life coaches do not necessarily have to have expertise in their clients’ respective domains but rather utilise coaching techniques to help clients find their own solutions.
Consulting: Consultants provide expert advice and solutions based on their expertise in a particular area. Life coaching, on the other hand, is collaborative and involves a co-creative partnership where the client is empowered to find their own answers.
Training: Trainers focus on delivering skills and knowledge to improve performance in specific areas, often through structured programmes. Life coaching differs as it centres on the client’s individual needs, encouraging personal insights and fostering decision-making capabilities.
These distinctions highlight the unique position of life coaching as a supportive, empowering process focused on personal growth and future-oriented development.
